Sidewalk Cleaning Requirements

Clean sidewalks are essential to maintaining a safe environment where people want to live, work, and visit, so everyday DDD maintenance crews hit the streets to keep downtown looking its best. They work 24/7, providing enhanced services such as picking up litter, pressure washing, graffiti removal and other cleaning services as needed.

We invite our downtown constituents to assist and partner with us in our cleaning efforts by adhering to Chapter 66, Division 2. Litter, Section 66-287 of Municipal City Statute, Ordinance No. 17,201 . The ordinance essentially states that the owner, his agent or occupant, of all premises shall be responsible to pick up all aggregate sweeping of garbage, trash, litter, grass cuttings, leaves, and all other waste materials from the premises, sidewalks and abutting property from the building facade to the curb line in front, extending 1 ½ feet from the curb line into the street or roadway and in the rear and alongside such premises owned or occupied so that such sweepings shall not under any circumstances reach the drains, gutters, streets, or roadways. The owner, his agent, or occupant shall be responsible to have all sweepings placed into containers sufficient to prevent sweepings from being scattered by the wind and placed out on the days designated for collection.

You can also help us by discouraging delivery vendors and others from driving over and/or parking on our beautiful new Canal Street sidewalks.

We look forward to working together to ensure that Downtown is the cleanest and safest place in New Orleans.

From the Ground Up
With an array of economic development programs, beautification services and feet on the street for enhanced public safety, the Downtown Development District has been a key player in moving Downtown New Orleans forward. The future holds tremendous opportunity and the DDD is helping turn these possibilities into realities, one at a time, from the ground up.
