| | There’s no place like home for the holidays, and the Downtown Development District is welcoming visitors and locals alike back to Canal Street this year where it will feel like home during the Canal Street: Your Home for the Holidays celebration. A month of activities has been designed to bring people back to the famous corridor for shopping, dining and sight-seeing. The holiday season kicks off on November 24 with the lighting of Canal Street and the tree at the Astor Crowne Plaza at 5:30 p.m. The McDonogh 35 High School Choir will enchant passers-by with classic holiday songs until Santa Claus arrives on a bright red streetcar to help "flip the switch" and light up the grand avenue! Local author Peggy Scott Laborde will also be on hand to sign copies of her latest book, "Christmas In New Orleans." That same night, Harrah's will preview the Miracle on Fulton Street festivities. |
The Canal Street Krewe of Kringle Parade, which will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5 will roll from Convention Center Boulevard up Canal Street and past the Roosevelt Hotel Grand Reviewing Stands at Baronne Street. After Santa toasts the crowd, the parade will continue rolling until it finishes at Elks Place. Santa Claus may steal the spotlight in the parade, but there will be plenty of other characters riding on holiday themed floats, including a Surprise Celebrity Guest! The parade will also include sky-high, stilt walking candy canes, marching bands, mascots from the Hornets, Saints, and Zephyrs, the Honeybees and the pint-sized Stingers, the Big Easy Rollergirls, the Rolling Elvi, pageant queens, and of course, the most venerable Canal Street character of all, Mr. Bingle! The sparkling holiday floats will come to a stop on Elks Place at Canal where they will encircle the park-turned-concert grounds! The all-star outdoor holiday concert will begin at approximately 12:00 noon, directly following the parade.

Entertainment from two of Downtown's most famous jazz musicians, Jeremy Davenport of the Davenport Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Tim Laughlin of the Roosevelt Hotel, will transform the park into a holiday concert ground like you won't find anywhere else! The crooners will be joined by local female vocalists as well as the gospel music group Shades of Praise. Kermit Ruffins will also make a special guest appearance! | |  |
 | | Throughout the season, merchants will hold holiday sales, offer in-store promotions and other activities. Kids on Canal Street is the theme for Saturday, December 12, when Radio Disney will be on site with songs, games, contests, and lots of excitement. Kids can be on the lookout for special Princess and the Frog Surprises! Santa will make a special appearance at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel, and those who bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots will get their picture taken with him for free! Children’s programming and entertainment, including crafts at the Chateau Bourbon Hotel, a gingerbread display at the Ritz Carlton and a puppet show by Calliope Puppets at the Shops at Canal Place, will take place at various locations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
