DESCRIPTION

Built in 1851 and rebuilt in the late 1920’s, Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church welcomes parishioners, friends, and visitors to the city of New Orleans. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church is one of the city’s architectural landmarks. You will notice the graceful arabesque arches, the onion-domed altars, and the geometric ornamentation throughout the church. These were designed by Fr. John Cambiaso, S.J. to imitate the Moorish churches of Spain, where he lived for a period of time. This architectural style reflects a period in Spain’s history when Muslims, Catholics, and Jews lived together peacefully and exchanged freely their cultural and intellectual heritages
